One of my assignments this week was to write a post on any topic related to social media and journalism. I decided to write about this article A Facebook story: A mother’s joy and a family’s sorrow.
This article talks about a woman named Shana Greatman Swers, who got pregnant and was married to Jeffrey Swers. They had a baby named Isaac Swers and the article said that even before Shana got pregnant she used to post on her facebook everything related with her life. “She loved writing about her husband, Jeff, her friends at work, and the prospect of having a baby. People who knew her followed every turn on the social network, starting when she wrote on March 10 that “Shana Greatman Swers and Jeff are thrilled to announce to the world that little baby Swers will be joining our family this September.”
In my opinion that is very private information and I would post everything on facebook like she did. I do know people who post on facebook everything like her, but I think some information should keep private. I also know many people who doesn’t have facebook acoount because of private issues.
“Isaac Lawrence Swers was born on Wednesday a little after 8:30 in the evening. He is 8 lbs 4 oz and 20.5 inches long. He has a full head of dark hair. He is, of course, perfect. Thanks for all the good thoughts you’ve sent our way for the past nine months. We feel truly blessed” from her facebook page and had 59 comments.
On the other hand, depend how many people are on her page. If she keeps only friends and family could be a good way to let them inform about all her pregnancy situation. I do have news from friends and cousins and their baby from Brazil and U.S. from facebook page. Maybe it is useful to inform people, share pictures, etc. I also have a friend who posted everything related with her marriage on facebook almost everyday. It was nice to know but on the other hand it was too much. It was too much personal information. But even though, I don’t use my facebook account to let people inform about personal stuff life with who I’m dating, what I will eat or what time I went to bed. I believe some information is too silly to post on facebook.
